Narrative design combines game design and game writing. It uses the
mechanics of game design to create a dramatically compelling story to
the game player. In a broader sense, narrative design is a unity of
carefully selected game mechanics that would adhere the story elements
in either textual or symbolic/visual form with the aim to fulfil the
desired gaming experience for the players. Narrative design can be
textual, visual, or aural. It is usually a tight bond of all these
mediums telling the story directly through playersâ senses in a form of
gaming experience that was set by the game designer.</p
Lecture Notes on Interactive Storytelling
These lecture notes collect the material used in the advanced course 'Interactive Storytelling' organized biannually at the Department of Future Technologies, University of Turku, Finland. Its aim is to present the key concepts behind interactive digital storytelling (IDS) as well as to review proposed and existing IDS systems. The course focuses on the four partakers of IDS: the platform, the designer, the interactor, and the storyworld. When constructing a platform, the problem is to select an appropriate approach from tightly controlled to emergent storytelling. On this platform, the designer is then responsible for creating the content (e.g., characters, props, scenes and events) for the storyworld, which is then experienced and influenced by the interactor. The structure and relationships between these partakers is explained from a theoretical perspective as well as using existing IDS systems as examples.</p
The end of the world as we know it : theoretical perspectives on apocalyptic science fiction

VÀitöskirja on kirjallisuus-historiallinen analyysi valituista post-apokalyptisista tieteiskirjallisuus -teoksista, ja samalla ensimmÀinen askel uuden kirjallisuusteorian luomisessa. Post-apokalyptisiÀ teoksia kirjoitetaan kommentoimaan katastrofeja tai muutoksia, joita kirjailija kokee omana aikanaan. NiitÀ ei tulisi lukea pyrkimyksenÀ ennustaa tulevaisuutta, vaan nykyajan heijastuksena. Kirjailijat voivat valikoivasti valita, kuka selviytyy apokalypsistÀ ja miten he reagoivat uuteen apokalyptiseen todellisuuteen.
Siksi on erityisen tĂ€rkeÀÀ, ettĂ€ luodaan uusi post-postmoderni teoria, jolla pystytÀÀn paremmin kĂ€sittelemÀÀn nykyhaasteita, esimerkiksi ilmastonmuutosta.
VÀitöskirja on ensimmÀinen askel tÀmÀn uuden teorian luomisessa.
Game User Experience And Player-Centered Design
For over a decade now game research has aimed at describing the game experience by attempting to see it from one perspective. In this paper, we collect, analyse, and merge together this work. As a result, we claim that a game experience is composed of three pairs of elements, none of which can be removed, or the systemin question is no longer a game. These elements are: (1) the game mechanics and action, (2) storyworld and narrative, and (3) aesthetics and sensory stimulus. This model can be illustrated in the formof a gem that encloses the fantasy and immersion of a game. Apart from games, this model is applicable to all kinds of storytelling, particularly interactive kinds. Beyond games, the different facets of the gem can be used by ignoring elements absent in the given narrative media.
